The Devastating and Enormous Impact of the Food Security Crisis: Looking at an Urgent Need for Solutions from all Sectors

Registration will close at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, July 26, 2022. This event is open to SID-US Members only.

Event details and Zoom link will only be sent to current members on Wednesday, July 27. If you are not a SID-US member and you'd like to join, please see membership information here or email [email protected].

In May UN Secretary-General António Guterres said "If we do not feed people, we feed conflict." Propelled by the war in Ukraine, the growing impact of climate change, supply chain disruptions, and the COVID-19 pandemic, the global food and nutrition security crisis has escalated to the point where it affects virtually every sector of international development on every continent. Years of development gains have been reversed with severe impacts on health and nutrition - particularly maternal and child health and vulnerable communities.  Global hunger levels are at a new high with more than 276 million severely food-insecure people, doubling in just two years. More than half a million people are living in famine conditions.

There are so many areas to focus on to try to combat this critical situation: anti-corruption efforts, economic development, education, climate and environmental initiatives, climate-resilient agriculture, innovation and technology to reduce a post-harvest loss (among other things), and maternal/child nutrition, to name just a few. We'll hear from experts in government and multilateral agencies and discuss what we in the international development community need to do - urgently - to help mitigate this growing crisis. We'll then ask our workgroups focusing on the sectors mentioned above to work on solutions and present their ideas and initiatives for mitigating today's crisis as well as for creating systems-level changes to avert future crises.

Join us on July 28 for this important session to kick off what we hope will be a series of important and action-oriented discussions around the devastating food security crisis.
